the-economics-of-porn
In response to the recent economic downturn, the US government has lent a helping hand to numerous homegrown industries. But most people laughed off Hustler founder Larry Flint’s bid for a porn industry bailout. While such a bailout would’ve proven politically disastrous, the industry is indeed experiencing desperate times. DVD sales have dropped 30% and pay-per-view sales are down 50% since the mid-2000s.
But despite the downturn, more people than ever are watching porn (albeit on free websites) and it’s cultivating an increasing mainstream acceptance. The industry is constantly referenced in films and on television and often finds itself the subject of parody, such as in the KoldCast original series “Blue Movies.” At the end of the day, technology may once again revitalize the industry. Global porn revenues for handheld devices could reach $4.9 billion by 2013, according to some estimates. With the 2010 Adult Entertainment Expo taking place this month in Las Vegas, we thought we’d take an in-depth look at the porn industry. ( from )
